What Is Jazz Dance?

Before the 1950s the term “jazz dance” referred to a range of dance styles that originated from the African American vernacular dances of the late 1800s to mid 1900s. During the 1950s, modern jazz dance appeared on the scene which was rooted in Caribbean traditional dance and had a very different style. There are many different styles of jazz dance which can all be traced back to one of these earlier styles.
Until the 1950s, the term jazz dancing was often used to refer to tap dancing. This is because tap dancing was one of the most prominent forms of dance of the era and was often performed to jazz music. Over many years, jazz dancing evolved and from it were born a range of social and concert styles. The origins of many popular forms of jazz dancing can be found here. Such styles include the Cakewalk, Charleston, Black Bottom, Jitterbug, Boogie Woogie and Swing – many of which still remain popular today.

It was after the 1950s that the modern jazz dance which is recognised by audiences and dancers around the world began to develop. During this period, there was an increased supremacy of other forms of entertainment music, and jazz dance evolved onto Broadway with a new smooth style that is epitomised by musicals such as Chicago and Cabaret. These popular musicals were choreographed by Bob Fosse who is largely responsible for popularising jazz dancing. He took much of his influence from choreographer Jack Cole who is often considered the father of jazz dance. To this day, modern jazz is an indispensible ingredient of musical theatre, which is very apparent in many contemporary music videos and competitive dances.

Modern jazz dance frequently influences other styles of dance such as ballet, contemporary and lyrical to mention just a few. It’s also ever-evolving as it is equally influenced by the styles of dances that it influences. As with most forms of dance, any proficient jazz dancer will require an excellent technique. The best jazz dancers benefit from a good working knowledge of ballet and as a result, training the jazz dancer often includes ballet training.

As with any style of dance, jazz dancing requires the dancer to wear a specific type of dance clothing. The most important of which are the dance shoes which are called jazz shoes. They usually have suede soles to allow the dancer to easily execute spins and turns whilst still providing adequate traction to move around the performance space without slipping over. The jazz shoe upper is usually made from soft leather which enables the dancer to easily flex the foot. Over time, the soft leather will also mould to the shape of the dancer’s foot to make them highly comfortable and enable the dancer to give their best possible performance.

There is a huge choice of jazz shoes on the market today which gives the dancer great choice. Jazz shoes can be high rise, low rise, slip on or lace up. Whilst they will almost always have a soft leather upper, they can occasionally have a pvc upper and even mesh insoles. They’re available from a wide range of brands such as Bloch, Dance Gear, Capezio and So Danca. These popular dancewear companies manufacture jazz shoes as well as a wide range of other dance clothing, bags and other dance accessories that dancers often use in dance class and for fashion.

What is Ballet Dancing?

In the fifteenth century ballet dancing was developed as a type of a performance dance. Over time, ballet took the form of a concert dance which included choreography and music for a production. Most people associate the ballet with such popular productions such as The Nutcracker.

Ballets are performed by trained dancers and often accompanied by professional orchestras or the music from famous composers, such as Tchaikovsky. Requiring years of training, ballet dancing is taught throughout the world. Children as young as two years of age can begin ballet lessons at a local dance studio.

What is Lyrical Dancing?

Lyrical dance is very similar to ballet dancing in that it involves a lot of the technical aspects of ballet but it also add more freedom of expression through fluid movements. Lyrical dance is more of a type of jazz, contemporary and modern dance combined within the framework of ballet dancing.

What is Jazz Dance?

Jazz dancing is a fun and energetic dance style. Combining fancy footwork, quick turns and big leaps, jazz dancers quickly gain attention because not only of their fluid movements, but also the grace and balance in which these movements are performed.

Jazz dance was developed back in the early 1900s through the African American vernacular dance as Africans were brought over on slave ships to America. Modern jazz dance, with roots in Caribbean style dancing, became popular in the 1950s. The syncopated rhythms of jazz dancing make its music popular. Dancers wishing to be proficient in jazz dance need a low center of gravity and a high level of energy.

The best way to learn to dance is to seek out a qualified, local dance studio for dance lessons. These types of performing arts schools should be focused on high quality, personalized training that helps develop well-rounded, technically sound performers. The Old school of this type of dance started off mainly as breakdancing, which in and of itself is a truly dynamic and remarkable style of hip hop!

Popping and locking are a couple of the original moves that dancers incorporated into their dance routines back in the early days of this dance history. By the late 1980′s the styles really began to take on new forms, and innovative dance moves were rapidly being developed.

Although breaking is still largely a part of the dance, more upright moves have become very popular as opposed to sticking mainly to moves performed on the floor. The popularity of this dance grew from the streets of New York and L.A., and has spread all throughout the globe!

The Newer Style of Lyrical Hip Hop

One of the newer styles that has emerged onto the dance scene is lyrical dance. This particular type is a very interpretive and fluid version of the conventional one that has been on the scene since the 1970′s. In essence, the dancers are telling a story through their dance routine, and thus must include some sort of acting abilities into the dance routine.

Although traditional dance styles and moves – like popping and locking – are still part of this newer dance style, the moves are much less rigid, and are more fluid in their execution. Whereas traditional moves dance to the beat of the music, lyrical moves dance along to the words of the song.

Do Ballet Dance Lessons Help with Getting in Shape?

A lot of people enroll into ballet summer camps with the motive of not only learning how to dance well but also to lose weight. But how much truth does this belief hold? Does ballet help you lose weight and get in shape or are most of these myths created by various people? In either case, we cannot ignore the fact that ballet is a very popular and much desired dance form and whatever is the final outcome, one thing is assured – you will learn to dance well.

If you are a beginner who is investing your summer in intensive ballet classes, be rest assured that there are little chances of you losing weight. The reason is that beginner ballet classes concentrate more of posture and gracefulness thereby teaching you to get the basic steps and getting your alignment right. Thus, the level of rigorous activity in these classes in pretty low as compared to some of the basic other weight losing activities like running. The only way to lose weight during beginner classes of ballet is to combine it with some other cross training like cycling or swimming. These exercises ensure the movement of the whole body thereby helping a person to shed more calories. However, consuming lesser calories is as important as shedding them. Thus junk food and ballet are never a good combination. It is true that an hour of a ballet summer program might make you exhausted and your body may demand foods that are high in calorific value. But the best thing to do in this situation is to not indulge in these cravings and continuing with a balanced and nourishing diet which includes milk, greens, and lots of water.

However, if you are not in beginner ballet, chances are that you are practicing the more complex jumps and leaps that consume a high amount of energy. Losing weight here is easy, but only relatively. One must not forget that ballet lessons tone your legs and what you lose in terms of fat, you might gain in terms of muscle. So if you are not losing weight; it should not be as much of an issue as getting in shape is. A lot of how you get in shape in dependent on the kind of lessons that your ballet instructor prescribes but most ballet lessons involve chassés, chainés and jétés – moves that cause your heart rate to go up and thus assist you in the process of losing weight. But here too, the concept of consuming lesser calories, avoiding junk food, and preferably taking a cross training program remain relevant.

So it does not matter if you are a first time ballet dancer or an adult beginner, ballet will help you get into shape if you combine it with the right kind of exercise and a proper balanced diet. Ballet steps and a committed workout schedule are both essential for you to dance your way to getting in shape.
